Carolyn
A. Johnson
Director of Music
Carolyn
Johnson has served as Director of Music at Hilltop since December 1990;
prior to that she worked as a free-lance substitute organist.
Carolyn
attended Hartford College for Women (1971) and Smith College (1973),
majoring in music. She remained at Smith, earning an MA in Musicology
(1975). She obtained her A.M.L.S. in Library Science at the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor, specializing in music librarianship. She has worked
for C. F. Peters, music publisher, and as a librarian at Hartford College
for Women, Columbia University, and Ithaca College. Carolyn has served as
Music Librarian at Connecticut College in New London since 1985, commuting
from Cromwell (almost on autopilot after so many years!).
At Hilltop
Carolyn is responsible for the music program of the church. In addition to
playing the organ and piano for worship services, she directs the Chancel
Choir and the Handbell Choir, and works with the younger children when a
choir is needed for special events or worship services. Carolyn also
arranges special musical events at Hilltop, such as the church Talent Show
and concerts by visiting musicians. She believes that music ministers to
the congregation in a very special way and searches for pieces in a variety
of styles that will bring the Word to the people and glory to God.
Carolyn
resides in Cromwell and has one son. In her spare (!) time she likes to
read, knit, take recreational classes (currently ballroom dancing – the
tango is her favorite), work out (any fellow Gazelle users out there?), and
sing in friend’s concert choirs.
